چکیده

The study of spatial cognition in psychology and cognitive neuroscience aims at identifying the neural and computational mechanisms underlying spatial behaviors such as homing (returning to the starting point of an excursion),wayfinding,or pointing to invisible targets from memory. As always in the empirical sciences, minimal, or parsimonious explanations are sought that make no unnecessary assumptions about the neural mechanisms or memory formats. One such memory format is the so-called homing vectorla vector pointing from the agent's current position back to the starting point of an excursion. The existence of more complex memory structures called cognitive maps is supported by experiments involving multiple places, routes, and goals. The paper introduces Virtual Reality as a method for studying human spatial cognition, describes two sample experiments, and sketches an overall theory of human spatial memory supported by empirical evidence.

Investigating the Effect of Music on Spatial Learning in a Virtual Reality Task

Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...

Behavioral Experiments in Spatial Cognition Using Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is used as a novel tool for behavioral experiments on humans. Two environments, Hexatown and Virtual T ubingen, are presented. Experiments on cognitive maps carried out in the Hexatown environment are reported in this paper. Results indicate that subjects are able to acquire con guration knowledge of the virtual town even in the absence of physical movement. Simpler mechanisms ...

Spatial Orientation in Virtual Environments: Background Considerations and Experiments

Spatial orientation strongly relies on visual and whole-body information available while moving through space. As virtual environments allow to isolate the contribution of visual information from the contribution of whole-body information, they are an attractive methodological means to investigate the role of visual information for spatial orientation. Using an elementary spatial orientation ta...

Isovists as a Means to Predict Spatial Experience and Behavior

Two experiments are presented studying interrelations between spatial properties of environments and both experience and spatial behavior. In order to systematically study such interrelations, a generic description of space is required that provides comparability between arbitrarily shaped environments and captures behaviorally relevant properties of space. In this study the suitability of isov...

Vision and Action in Virtual Environments: Modern Psychophysics in Spatial Cognition Research

The classical psychophysical approach to human perception has been to study isolated aspects of perception using well-controlled and strongly simplified laboratory stimuli. This so-called cue reduction technique has successfully led to the identification of numerous perceptual mechanisms, and has in many cases guided the uncoverage of neural correlates (see chapters elsewhere in this volume). I...
